How to Make Wudu
Step-by-step illustrated guide - 8 steps
Make your intention in your heart to perform Wudu for the sake of Allah. No specific words are required; the intention is in the heart.
NoteBegin with Bismillah (بِسْمِ اللَّهِ)
Based on the Hanafi method. Steps are the same across all major madhabs with minor differences.
التيمم
Tayammum. Dry Ablution
When water is unavailable or its use would cause harm, perform Tayammum with clean earth, sand, stone, or dust.
When Tayammum is valid
✓No water available within 1 mile
✓Water exists but using it would cause illness or worsen injury
✓Water is present but reserved for drinking (survival)
✓Extremely cold and using water would cause genuine harm
✓Medical condition prevents contact with water on part of the body
Quran 4:43, "...and you find no water, then perform Tayammum with clean earth."
1
Niyyahالنية
Make the intention in your heart to perform Tayammum for purification (for Wudu or Ghusl, whichever applies). Say Bismillah.
Note · Intention is in the heart. No specific words are required.
2
Strike the earth onceضرب الصعيد
Strike both palms flat on clean earth, sand, stone, or dust. One strike is sufficient.
Note · The surface must be clean and dry. Carpets, walls, and concrete covered in dust are acceptable if dust is present.
3
Wipe the faceمسح الوجه
Wipe the entire face once with both hands from forehead to chin.
Note · One complete wipe is sufficient. No need to rinse the mouth or nose in Tayammum.
4
Wipe both hands to the wristsمسح اليدين
Wipe the back of the right hand with the left palm up to the wrist, then wipe the back of the left hand with the right palm up to the wrist.
Note · Hanafi: wipe up to the elbows (same as Wudu extent). Majority: wrists only. One wipe each is sufficient.
What Tayammum covers
✓Wudu replacement (for minor impurity)
✓Ghusl replacement (for major impurity)
✓Multiple prayers with one Tayammum (if the excuse continues)
✗Does NOT become invalid immediately if water is found, complete your prayer first
✗Invalidated by same things that break Wudu (+ finding water)
Tayammum rulings sourced from Sahih Bukhari 335-338 and mainstream Sunni fiqh. Minor madhab differences exist.
