Sajda in the Quran
There are 15 Sajda (prostration) points in the Quran. When you recite or hear these ayahs, perform Sajda al-Tilaawah. The Hanafi madhab counts 14, not counting the second sajda in Surah Al-Hajj (22:77) as a Sajda Tilawah.
How to perform Sajda al-Tilaawah
- Say Allahu Akbar and go into Sajda (facing Qiblah)
- Say Subhāna Rabbiyal A'lā three times
- Rise from Sajda saying Allahu Akbar
- No Tasleem (Salaam) required - it is not a full prayer
Wudu is required. Women in menstruation are exempt. Verify specifics with your local scholar.
Hanafi: Wajib. Others: Sunnah Muakkadah
First of two sajdas in Al-Hajj
Second sajda; Hanafi: not a sajda tilawah
Hanafi: Sajda Tilawah, Wajib. Shafi'i: Sajda al-Shukr (gratitude), not recitation
From the surah whose first five verses were the first revelation
Madhab note: Hanafi school considers 14 Sajda obligatory (Wajib), excluding the second sajda in Surah Al-Hajj (22:77) and including Sad (38:24) as Sajda Tilawah. Shafi'i scholars hold that Sad (38:24) is a Sajda al-Shukr (gratitude) rather than Sajda Tilawah, and count both Hajj sajdas. Hanbalis recognise all 15 as Sajda Tilawah, performed as Sunnah.
