المذاهب الفقهية

Islamic Schools of Law

The four Sunni madhabs and the Ja'fari Shia school. All are valid, scholarly-derived systems. The differences are a mercy, not a division.

Hanafi Madhab

الحنفية

Imam Abu Hanifa al-Numan (699 - 767 CE)

~45% of Sunni Muslims
Turkey, South Asia, Central Asia, Balkans

The largest madhab in terms of followers. Imam Abu Hanifa was born in Kufa (modern Iraq) to a Persian family. Known for his use of analogical reasoning (Qiyas) and his rigorous approach to fiqh. His school became the official madhab of the Ottoman Empire.

Key Characteristics

Istihsan (juristic preference) is a key tool where strict analogy would lead to hardship

Considered by many to be the school most adapted to local custom (urf)

Most flexible on issues of governance and public law among Sunni schools

All madhabs lead to the same destination

The differences between madhabs are real but they are in detail, not in the fundamentals of faith. All four Sunni Imams were friends and mutual admirers. Imam Al-Shafi'i studied under Imam Malik. Imam Ahmad studied under Imam Al-Shafi'i. These schools represent a rich intellectual legacy of scholarship. If you are new to Islam, follow the madhab of your community or a local scholar. If you are established, follow the madhab you know and avoid "madhab shopping" to find convenient rulings.
