Waqf (Stop) Symbols Explained

Mandatory Stop (Waqf Lazim)

Stopping is required. Continuing would change the meaning.

لا

No Stop (Waqf Mamnoo)

Do not stop here. Continue reading without pause.

Absolute Stop (Waqf Mutlaq)

You may stop here. The meaning is complete.

Permitted Stop (Waqf Jaaiz)

Stopping is permitted but continuing is also fine.

Better to Continue (Waqf Mujawwaz)

Stopping is allowed but continuing is preferred.

Absolute Permission (Waqf Murakhkhas)

Stopping is absolutely permitted here.

Better to Continue (Wasl Ula)

Continuing is preferred over stopping.

قل

Sufficient Stop (Waqf Kaafi)

A sufficient stopping point; meaning is clear.

قلى

Better to Stop (Waqf Awla)

Stopping here is preferred over continuing.

End of Ayah

Marks the end of an ayah. Stopping is sunnah.

Simple rule for beginners
